"The visitor figures are each country's own published counts, as held when this paper was built. 38 of the 71 countries in this edition count visitors at the border; 33 count guests or nights from abroad at accommodation, where each stay is counted, so their levels are read for direction, not size. Only travel from abroad is used: where a country counts every guest, its foreign guests alone are taken.",
"Kept out: estimates from international bodies, bookings or search data, and any figure a country did not publish itself. A country with no figure for the month is not estimated (see Coverage in full). A month that jumps far above the months around it with no change in what is counted is set aside as a likely error; a series that changed what it counts is not compared across the change; a series that covers part of a country only, or counts residents, is held back.",
"The world and regional figures are a weighted geometric mean of each country's change on a year, weighted by the square root of its size, so the large destinations count for more and no single country decides them. The largest rise and fall are named among destinations of 100,000 visitors a month or more. Every number in the text was checked against the figures before publication, and a paper that fails the check is held back, not published."
