Not on the list; on the travel-not-recommended list for named regions; hu class

Travel to Armenia with increased caution, but avoid Nagorno-Karabakh, the ceasefire zone and the shared border area with Azerbaijan because approaching the Armenian-Azerbaijani line is extremely dangerous. The conflict has increased security risks, and mined areas and unexploded ordnance make the border zone hazardous. Armenia is also prone to earthquakes and landslides, and political mass gatherings should be avoided.

Level 1 for the whole country: take sufficient care; level 3 or 4 for named regions: do not travel, or evacuate

Take sufficient care across Armenia, but do not travel to areas along the Azerbaijan border, including Nakhchivan, and evacuate immediately if there. Avoid nonessential travel to all of Syunik and to areas adjoining level 4 areas in Ararat, Gegharkunik, Vayots Zor and Tavush, because border incidents may spread. Areas outside the higher risk zones, including Yerevan, are level 1, although precautions remain necessary.

Colour code yellow: pay attention, there are safety risks; red (do not travel) for named regions

Do not travel within 5 kilometres of the Azerbaijan border because shelling can occur and mines or unexploded ordnance remain. Elsewhere, exercise caution on the H53 and H26 routes, the M14 by Lake Sevan and the M2, and stay on main roads between Yeraskh and Noravank because of mines. The Turkish and Azerbaijani border crossings are closed. Avoid demonstrations and watch for earthquakes, theft, LGBTQ+ discrimination and severe drug penalties.

Avoid all travel to parts

Avoid all travel to parts of Armenia. British citizens entering from Iran should travel only if they feel safe, because British authorities cannot ensure their safety and Iranian authorities may detain them for holding a British passport or perceived UK connections. The land border with Iran is open to foreign nationals, but crossing remains at the traveller's own risk. Altitude sickness is a risk in some parts of Armenia.

Level 2: exercise increased caution; do not travel to named regions

Exercise increased caution in Armenia because further military activity and potential armed conflict may occur. Do not travel to the border region with Azerbaijan. U.S. Embassy employees and their families cannot travel for non-essential reasons to specified areas of Gegharkunik and Syunik, and travel through Yeraskh village in Ararat is allowed only without stopping.

Avoid travel to the Armenia Azerbaijan border areas and the road between Ijevani and Noyemberyani. Always consider the risk of an earthquake because Armenia lies in a seismically active region. Estonian tourists driving there must hold a valid Estonian driving licence. They may stay visa free for up to 180 days within one year.

Exercise normal security precautions; regional advisory

Exercise normal security precautions in Armenia, but avoid all travel within 1 km of the eastern border with Azerbaijan and on the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan. The border area has uncertain security, ceasefire violations, buried landmines, restricted access and closed, militarized crossings. Elsewhere, be alert to petty crime, terrorism, demonstrations and dangerous rural roads.

Avoid travel to areas adjoining the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, including the roughly 15 kilometre strip along its full length and transit through it. Sporadic local exchanges and attacks on civilian infrastructure have occurred, and the security situation may deteriorate without warning. In central Yerevan, demonstrations and protests may lead to clashes with police, so avoid risky locations and large gatherings.

Ireland1High caution
High degree of caution

Exercise a high degree of caution when travelling to Armenia. Avoid all travel near the Azerbaijani border, particularly in Syunik, Vayots Dzor and eastern Gegharkunik, and avoid travel to Nagorno-Karabakh. Be especially vigilant around demonstrations, which may occur near Opera Square in central Yerevan and can turn confrontational, and take care when driving because roads outside major cities can be poor and driving standards are low.

Slovenia1High caution
Increased caution

Exercise increased caution and check conditions from other sources. Avoid travel and movement in the Azerbaijan border area and avoid travel to Nagorno-Karabakh, as the border is closed and land mines remain a danger in some border areas. The border with Turkey is also closed. Avoid demonstrations in Yerevan. Petty theft, drink-spiking, weak health care outside major cities, poor roads, earthquakes and terrorism require particular care.

Austria0Normal precautions
Security level 1: good security; security level 2: security risk for named regions

Armenia’s Azerbaijan border regions carry a security risk: restricted zones require permits, mines exist in parts, and clashes involving Iran make the region volatile. Check roads before car or bus travel, especially the M16 through Tavush and Noyemberyan toward Bagratashen/Sadakhlo. Elsewhere security is good, but avoid demonstrations and isolated places after dark; Yerevan regularly holds demonstrations. Hospitals outside cities and medicine supplies may be inadequate; arrange insurance.
