What each government says

Its level on one scale, its own wording, and a summary of its advice written from its own text

United States12 in parts
Level 2: exercise increased caution; reconsider travel to named regions

Exercise increased caution in Belize because violent crime, including sexual assault, armed robbery, home invasion and murder, can occur even in tourist areas, while emergency medical services may be unavailable or delayed. Reconsider travel to Southside Belize City because of crime. Avoid driving between cities after dark, and U.S. government employees are strongly discouraged from traveling south of Belize City between the Haulover Creek Canal and Fabers Road.

Security level 2: security risk

Exercise caution in Belize, particularly at night in remote or dark areas and when travelling alone as a woman, because robberies and rape of female tourists occur repeatedly. Take standard precautions, carry little cash and copy documents. Medical care does not meet European standards, dengue infections have risen sharply, and hospital costs may be high, so comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Canada1High caution
Exercise a high degree of caution; regional advisory

Exercise a high degree of caution throughout Belize because violent crime is widespread, including murders, armed robbery, assault and gang activity, while police response capacity is limited. Avoid non-essential travel to Southside Belize City south of the Haulover Creek River because of gang and drug related violence. In emergency areas, expect increased security presence, movement restrictions and transport disruption. At border areas, use official crossings and avoid travelling after dark.

Hungary1High caution
Not on the list; hu class

Travel to Belize with increased caution because routes used for drug trafficking have contributed to a marked deterioration in public security. Tropical storms and hurricanes can bring gale-force winds, torrential rain, coastal flooding and landslides, so monitor local reports and official warnings and follow all instructions. Hungarian citizens may visit for tourism without a visa for 30 days, but their passport must remain valid for at least three months after entry.

Ireland1High caution
High degree of caution

Exercise a high degree of caution in Belize because violent crime is high. Avoid unnecessary travel to southern Belize City, south of Haulover Creek, where violent crime and gang violence are high, and take particular care at land borders, using only recognised crossings. Travel overland outside major cities and resorts only in daylight; also consider hurricane season, limited medical facilities, Zika and chikungunya.

Colour code yellow: pay attention, there are safety risks

Exercise caution in Belize because armed gangs commit serious crime, particularly in remote forested areas along the Guatemalan border and in southern Belize City neighbourhoods. Visit only larger towns with amenities and tourist bus routes, and avoid remote streets, neighbourhoods and parks. Tropical storms can occur, especially from June to November; discrimination and severe drug penalties are additional concerns.

Increased caution

Exercise increased caution in Belize due to violent crime and gangs in remote forests near the Guatemala border. Cross the border at official checkpoints because of a dispute, avoid dark routes, and use qualified guides off road. Health risks include Zika, malaria, dengue, rabies and typhoid, and some facilities fall below European standards. Occasional, mostly peaceful protests may occur in Belize City and Belmopan, with hurricane, earthquake and tsunami risks.
