Travel advice for Guinea

Caution is common, three advise against non-essential travel
Summary of 15 governments, written 4 Nov 2026Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands and the United States advise caution, focusing on crime, unrest, demonstrations and dangerous roads. Austria, Japan and Slovenia go further by advising against non-essential travel, with Japan avoiding the Mali border and Slovenia avoiding border areas with Sierra Leone, Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire and Mali. Belgium, Estonia, the United Kingdom and Singapore keep normal precautions, though Belgium and the United Kingdom still highlight specific security, entry and health measures.

Level 2 for the whole country: avoid non-essential travel; level 3 or 4 for named regions: do not travel, or evacuate

Avoid non-essential travel to Guinea because political and security conditions are fluid, and frequent civic demonstrations could develop into large-scale demonstrations, unrest or riots. Do not travel to the border area with Mali, where conflicts over gold mining and concern about suspected members of terrorist organisations entering from Mali create additional risks. Conakry and all other areas are also subject to the advice to avoid non-essential travel.

Austria2Avoid non-essential
Security level 3: high security risk

Avoid unnecessary travel to Guinea because security risk is high. Supply strains mean violent unrest between political and ethnic groups and security forces cannot be ruled out, nor can attacks on Western facilities and citizens. Avoid crowds, remain alert and follow security instructions. In Conakry and the interior, avoid night driving due to robbery and poor roads and use convoys inland; medical care is limited and malaria risk is high.

High caution: avoid non-essential travel

Avoid unnecessary travel to Guinea because political and ethnic tensions, terrorism, armed crime, piracy and disease outbreaks make travel risky. Avoid border areas with Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast and Mali, and use extra caution in Conakry and its outskirts, where criminals impersonate police or soldiers and steal cars. Avoid protests and gatherings, especially near military sites. Fuel shortages cause tension, while roads can flood and medical facilities are poor.

Colour code yellow: pay attention, there are safety risks; orange (essential travel only) for named regions

Travel to Guinea with caution, but make only essential trips to the Guinea-Mali and Guinea-Côte d’Ivoire border areas, including northern and eastern Kankan, because criminal groups are active there and attacks and kidnappings are possible. Terrorist attacks cannot be ruled out, especially near Mali, while Conakry has kidnappings and robberies and car theft occurs elsewhere, including at roadblocks. Avoid demonstrations, crowds and streets after sunset, and follow local authorities.

Australia advises a high degree of caution for Guinea.

Level since 1 Nov 2021
Canada1High caution
Exercise a high degree of caution

Exercise a high degree of caution in Guinea because political and social tensions mean the evolving situation after a coup could deteriorate quickly. Avoid demonstrations, border areas affected by armed activity, interethnic violence around Nzérékoré and confrontations in industrial cities such as Fria. Remain alert to crime, terrorism, roadblocks, shortages and unsafe roads. Outside major centres, use a four wheel drive vehicle in daylight and travel in convoy.

Ireland1High caution
High degree of caution

Exercise a high degree of caution in Guinea because demonstrations can turn violent, terrorist attacks may target areas frequented by tourists, and medical services are poor, especially remotely. Avoid large demonstrations near military barracks, and watch for gunpoint theft, carjacking and burglaries in Conakry’s outlying suburbs and on roads to several cities. Take care near borders, avoid driving outside cities at night, and expect hazardous roads and extortion at checkpoints.

United States1High caution
Level 2: exercise increased caution

Exercise increased caution in Guinea because of crime, unrest and limited health infrastructure. Crimes of opportunity are common, especially in Conakry; stay alert in crowded areas such as markets. Protests can occur without warning, turn violent and disrupt services; security forces may use tear gas and gunfire, while U.S. government employees in Guinea may not travel between cities at night. Local drinking water and locally available medications may be unsafe.

No advice against travel

Be vigilant in Conakry and near the Mali border. Demonstrations may clash with authorities, cause casualties and disrupt traffic near Route Le Prince; avoid that route and carry identification. Avoid risky contacts and practise hand and surface hygiene because of an mpox outbreak. Photography of official infrastructure or uniformed people is prohibited and may lead to fines, equipment seizure or arrest; arriving passengers need yellow fever vaccination certificates.

No advisory

Singapore issues no advisory for Guinea. Travellers should ensure their passport has six months' validity at departure and seek medical advice on vaccinations and travel insurance, as Guinea has a yellow fever risk and vaccination is advised 10 days before travel. Arrivals in Singapore from countries with that risk require a valid vaccination certificate regardless of area, city or region. Those without one are liable to six days' quarantine.

No warning

Ensure your passport is valid for six months after arrival, obtain the correct visa, and meet yellow fever and customs rules. A visa permits visits of up to 90 days, but nationals may be refused entry if they use the wrong visa. There are no emergency services, so arrange medical care locally, including in remote areas, and insure for treatment or evacuation. Conakry has clinics and limited consular assistance.
