Hong Kong advises normal precautions for British Indian Ocean Territory.
The British Indian Ocean Territory is not a tourist destination and requires a permit. Yacht crews need a mooring permit for the outer islands, applied for at least six weeks ahead with insurance. Medical facilities are limited, with no hospitals or air ambulances, and evacuations take 24 to 72 hours to organise. Terrorism cannot be ruled out, and piracy is a risk in the Gulf of Aden.
