Be extra careful; avoid all non-essential travel for named regions
Visit Laos only with compelling reasons, and avoid all non-essential travel to Xaisomboun province because clashes between security authorities and insurgent groups create a high security risk. Be particularly alert to crime, terrorism, violent demonstrations, landmines, drink tampering and methanol, card scams, and fuel or transport disruption. Take extra care in major cities, border areas, Xieng Khouang province and along the Vietnam border, and follow local authorities' instructions.
Level 1 for the whole country: take sufficient care; level 2 for named regions: avoid non-essential travel
Avoid non-essential travel to Xaysomboun Province and parts of Xiangkhouang Province bordering it, including southern Phou Kout District, because clashes between antigovernment forces and government forces have caused civilian deaths and injuries. Elsewhere, including Vientiane, take sufficient care. In Bokèo Special Economic Zone, beware of recruitment scams that lure foreign nationals to commit fraud and may expose women to forced labour, confinement, and trafficking.

Colour code yellow: pay attention, there are safety risks; orange (essential travel only) for named regions
Travel only if essential to Xaysomboune and the Laos Myanmar border area in Bokeo Province, where rebels, armed gangs, drug smugglers and human traffickers operate. Stay on main roads in Xaysomboune and avoid travel after dark. Elsewhere in Laos, exercise caution due to pickpocketing, armed robbery, sexual abuse after being drugged, and severe drug penalties. In Vang Vieng, avoid food or drinks containing drugs, and elsewhere drink only sealed alcohol.

Increased caution; high caution: avoid non-essential travel for named regions
Avoid nonessential travel to Xaisomboun because government and opposing forces fight, and to Bokeo because armed groups linked to drug trafficking clash. Xaisomboun needs a permit and official escort. Avoid the Golden Triangle due to organised crime, human trafficking and slavery. Use increased caution near the Vietnam border, Road 7 and listed provinces because unexploded ordnance remains, and in Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng because theft and attacks occur.

Avoid all but essential travel to parts
Avoid all but essential travel to parts of Laos. Dengue and malaria are endemic, with dengue cases increasing during the rainy season, while regional air pollution may aggravate heart, lung and respiratory conditions. Anthrax has been found in cattle and buffalo near tourist areas around the 4,000 Islands, Pakse and the Bolaven Plateau; avoid animal contact and cook meat thoroughly.

Level 2: exercise increased caution; reconsider travel to named regions
Exercise increased caution in Laos because of crime, unrest, and unexploded ordnances. Reconsider travel to Xaisomboun Province because of civil unrest. Use increased caution near the Burma border, in Savannakhet, Xieng Khouang, Salavan, Khammouane, Sekong, Champasak, Houaphanh, Attapeu, Luang Prabang, and Vientiane provinces, and along Routes 7, 9, and 20 because of crime, and in these provinces and along Route 7 because of unexploded ordnances.

Austria1High caution
Security level 2: security risk
Austria advises caution across Laos due to security risk. It reports methanol-laced drinks in Vang Vieng, robberies and handbag theft in Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng, and urges caution in Xaisomboun province and on the Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng route. Travel overland only in daylight, never leave marked routes in Xieng Khouang or at the Vietnam border due to mines, and avoid independent travel without a local agency.

Canada1High caution
Exercise a high degree of caution; regional advisory
Exercise a high degree of caution throughout Laos because of banditry, crime, spiked food and drinks, and unexploded munitions. Avoid non-essential travel to Xaisomboun province and specified areas of Bokeo province because of random shootings and criminal activity. The restricted Bokeo areas include land within 10 km of the Myanmar and Thailand borders, excluding Bokeo International Airport and Road 3 leading to it, and the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone.

Hungary1High caution
Not on the list; hu class
Hungary advises travel with heightened caution because Laos has limited healthcare, epidemic risk and unexploded ordnance. Beware scam centres offering foreign citizens work, business or romantic opportunities, which may confiscate passports and force labour. Avoid overcrowded boats without life jackets in northern Laos, and check conditions before travelling from southern Laos to Thailand or Cambodia. Nationwide, avoid unregulated drinks and products because of methanol poisoning, especially in Vang Vieng.
Travel to Laos is generally safe when normal precautions are followed. Be especially vigilant in the Xaysomboune region and along the Myanmar border, and exercise extra caution in Bokeo Province, particularly near the Thailand and Myanmar borders.
Take normal precautions in Laos. Estonia has no representation, so consult other countries' travel information and alerts. A visa is required, drivers need Estonian and international licences, and Laos may change entry or stay conditions without prompt notice. Since 1 September 2025, a digital form has been required at Wattay, Luangprabang and Pakse airports and Lao Thai Friendship Bridge I, expanding to all international border crossings from early 2026.
