Austria13 in parts
Security level 2: security risk; security level 4: travel warning for named regions

Avoid travel to Western Sahara's interior and remote Saharan zones of southern Morocco, especially near the Algerian border. Do not leave the Laayoune to Dakhla to Mauritanian border route, because the border region is largely mined and leaving the sandy crossing road is life threatening. Elsewhere, use reputable official operators for desert, mountain and round trips, and take extra care when travelling alone as a woman.

Colour code yellow: pay attention, there are safety risks; red (do not travel) for named regions

Do not travel to the Morocco-Mauritania border area, including parts of Western Sahara near it, because violence is recurrent and mines and unexploded ordnance lie there. Travel only if essential to the military Morocco-Algeria border zone. The rest of Morocco is yellow: watch for terrorism, pickpocketing, violent demonstrations, earthquakes, wildfires and flooding; in Western Sahara, stay on the coastal road between Laayoune and Dakhla.

Be extra careful; avoid all non-essential travel for named regions

Avoid all non-essential travel to the immediate Algerian border area because border disputes cause instability and the border is often unmarked. Nationwide, be extra careful about terror attacks without warning, violent crime, demonstrations, dangerous traffic, earthquakes, winter floods and summer wildfires. Do not trek alone in the mountains or desert, use certified local guides, avoid carrying valuables and do not resist an attacker. Embassy assistance is limited in Western Sahara.
