United States2Avoid non-essential
Level 3: reconsider travel

Travel to Nicaragua should be reconsidered and non-essential travel avoided because of crime, limited health care, wrongful detention, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, and natural hazards. Nationals risk detention, exit bans, device searches, and penalties for photography or drone use. Violent crime can occur anywhere and petty crime is common. Comprehensive care is concentrated in Managua, while employees face driving and public transport restrictions, including bans on Managua venues.

Caution is advised nationwide, as security level 2 applies. Demonstrations may turn violent; foreign nationals may face arbitrary arrest or exit bans over activities seen as government criticism. Avoid demonstrations and outdoor travel after dark, and use only approved taxis. Theft, robbery, violence and express kidnappings occur, and caution is advised in rural Nueva Segovia, Madriz, Jinotega, Estelí, Matagalpa and the southern Atlantic coast, where murder rates are higher.

Exercise a high degree of caution

Exercise a high degree of caution in Nicaragua because political repression, civil unrest, crime and express kidnappings are risks. Avoid political activity and demonstrations, secure valuables, use reputable taxis and official border crossings. Property crime is frequent in poor urban neighbourhoods and remote coastal areas, while assault and robbery are especially high in parts of Managua and criminal gangs are more active near the Costa Rica and Honduras borders.

Level 1 for the whole country: take sufficient care

Take sufficient care throughout Nicaragua. Although large anti-government demonstrations are not currently expected, unpermitted protests may occur suddenly, so keep abreast of security information through reporting. Economic hardship and unemployment continue, and recorded ordinary crime increased in 2023, so remain alert while travelling and staying there.

Colour code yellow: pay attention, there are safety risks

Exercise caution in Nicaragua because crime, sexual violence against foreign tourists, robberies and other violence are risks, and police may not assist with reports. Avoid going alone at night, use official taxis, stay in tourist areas, and do not resist attackers. Also watch for demonstrations and political restrictions, discrimination towards LGBTQ+ people, severe drug penalties, traffic crashes, tropical storms, earthquakes, volcanoes and dangerous currents, and follow local guidance.
