Security level 1: good security
Exercise normal precautions, as wildfires are possible throughout Portugal from spring to autumn. Guard against petty crime in central squares, rented accommodation and public transport. When taking a taxi from Lisbon Airport, ensure the meter runs or use a pre-purchased fixed-price voucher. The Atlantic coast has dangerous undercurrents and high surf; mainland coasts have Atlantic and Mediterranean climates, the interior is continental, Madeira is subtropical and the Azores temperate.
Travel to Portugal can generally be undertaken safely provided usual precautions are followed. There is no advice against travel.

Exercise normal security precautions
Exercise normal security precautions in Portugal. Petty crime, especially pickpocketing and bag snatching, is common in tourist areas and major cities, so secure belongings and avoid isolated ATMs. Violent crime is rare, but assaults occur in popular tourist areas and nightlife districts, while vehicle break-ins are frequent. Be vigilant at demonstrations and crowded events, beware of drink spiking, and obey warning flags because strong currents and rip currents cause drownings.

Be aware
Exercise normal precautions in Portugal, remain alert to suspicious activity, and stay informed; Portugal’s overseas areas are not covered. Guard against pickpocketing, bag theft and robbery, especially in Lisbon and the Algarve, and do not resist armed attackers. Terror attacks can occur without warning at crowded places. Avoid demonstrations, prepare for wildfires, earthquakes and sudden disasters, and use authorised taxis rather than unsolicited offers in hazardous traffic.

Usual caution
Use usual precautions when travelling to Portugal, as there is no increased risk or security reason to avoid travel. Monitor warnings and follow local restrictions because summer heat, low humidity and wind create very high to maximal wildfire danger, especially in northern and central Portugal. Guard against pickpocketing in crowded tourist areas and on public transport, follow beach warning flags, and note earthquake and low-probability terrorism risks.
