What each government says

Its level on one scale, its own wording, and a summary of its advice written from its own text

Slovenia13 in parts
Increased caution; highest caution: avoid all travel or leave for named regions

Avoid non-essential travel to highest-caution areas and otherwise exercise increased caution in Sierra Leone, checking conditions and consulting other sources. Opportunistic theft is common and violent theft is increasing in Freetown, especially around Lumley Beach and Aberdeen nightlife, where police response is limited. Off-road driving is discouraged in Kono, Kambia and Kailahun and near Liberia because unexploded ordnance remains; malaria, Lassa fever, rabies and waterborne diseases also pose risks.

Austria12 in parts
Security level 2: security risk; security level 3: high security risk for named regions

Avoid non-essential travel to the border areas with Liberia because they have a high security risk. In the rest of Sierra Leone, petty crime, armed robbery and burglaries occur, so carry only small amounts of cash, avoid walking alone after dark and do not make night journeys by road. Possible spillover attacks against western institutions and nationals are also a concern, while medical care is not assured to European standards.

Belgium02 in parts
No advice against travel; advises against non-essential travel for named regions

Travel to Sierra Leone with caution. Avoid non-essential travel to border areas with Côte d'Ivoire and Guinea, including around Yenga in the Eastern Province, where tensions with Guinea have risen. Sierra Leone has introduced screening for arriving travellers and expects stricter health checks because the WHO declared Ebola an international public health emergency.

Australia1High caution
Exercise a high degree of caution

Australia advises a high degree of caution for Sierra Leone.

Level since 1 Nov 2021
Canada1High caution
Exercise a high degree of caution

Exercise a high degree of caution in Sierra Leone because crime is a concern. Border areas face territorial disputes, military operations, militia activity, possible armed confrontations and sudden border closures, while terrorism and civil unrest cannot be ruled out. Petty and violent crime, demonstrations, dangerous road conditions and limited rural emergency assistance require vigilance, particularly in Freetown and near borders with Guinea and Liberia.

Ireland1High caution
High degree of caution

Exercise a high degree of caution because demonstrations, protests and other insecurity can occur at any time and sometimes result in violence. Avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, remain vigilant, and leave immediately if you become aware of nearby protests. Petty crime, including pickpocketing and bag snatching, is common in urban areas, especially around Lumley Beach. Electricity is unreliable, road accidents are common, and emergency medical services are limited.

Japan1High caution
Level 1 for the whole country: take sufficient care

Japan advises taking sufficient care throughout Sierra Leone because current security is relatively calm but could deteriorate suddenly. An armed group attacked a Freetown military barracks in 2023, and nearly 2,000 inmates escaped after a prison attack, while no violent extremist activity occurred during the election. Guard against pickpocketing and other crime targeting foreigners, and maintain security measures because terrorist attacks are frequent in West Africa.

Netherlands1High caution
Colour code yellow: pay attention, there are safety risks

Exercise caution because robberies involving extreme violence, violence by drug gangs, political unrest and demonstrations occur in Freetown and larger cities. Travel to and from Lungi airport during daylight, avoid streets after sunset, and stay in secure accommodation. Be alert to rainy season landslides in hills around Freetown. Severe penalties apply for drugs, LGBTQ+ conduct and photographing government or military sites. Poor healthcare makes good medical insurance important.

United States1High caution
Level 2: exercise increased caution

Exercise increased caution because of crime, unrest, and inadequate health infrastructure. Violent crime, including robbery and assault, occurs frequently, especially in Freetown, and police resources are limited. Do not travel outside the Freetown Peninsula after nightfall; protests can occur with little warning and occasionally become violent. Health services do not meet U.S. standards, local medicines may be unsafe, and travelers should obtain medical or travel insurance and bring sufficient prescriptions.

Estonia0Normal precautions
Ee level 0

Exercise normal precautions when travelling to Sierra Leone. Because Estonia has no representation there, seek consular help from the nearest European Union member state and check other countries' travel information. A visa and proof of yellow fever vaccination are required, and travellers must complete a health declaration when entering and leaving, as conditions may change without notice. Drivers need a valid Estonian licence and a Geneva Convention international driving permit.

Check visa requirements, ensure your passport has at least six months’ validity on departure, seek medical advice, and buy comprehensive travel insurance. Yellow fever transmission is a risk, so vaccination is advised 10 days before travel; without a valid certificate when returning to Singapore, travellers may face six-day quarantine, while non-residents refusing quarantine may be denied entry.

United Kingdom0Normal precautions
No warning

Use normal precautions when travelling to Sierra Leone, and check entry requirements before departure. A valid passport and visa are required, and you must have proof of yellow fever vaccination. Complete the required health declaration and expect enhanced Ebola screening on arrival, as non-compliance may cause delays or refusal of entry or departure. Declare prohibited or taxable goods, and obtain an export licence for precious stones.
