Austria1High caution
Security level 2: security risk
Exercise caution throughout Suriname because a security risk applies nationwide. Theft and robbery are particularly a concern in Paramaribo, especially in Palm Garden after dark; protests may bring property damage, looting and violence, so follow security-force instructions. Police and emergency services are scarce in the interior, and insect protection against tropical diseases is recommended.

Ireland1High caution
High degree of caution
Exercise a high degree of caution because pickpocketing and robbery occur in Paramaribo and medical facilities are limited, especially outside the city. Do not walk alone at night, avoid displaying wealth, and take particular care around local banks and secluded areas such as Palm Garden. Drug possession can lead to penalties and lengthy prison sentences. Suriname is prone to flooding, particularly in the north and centre during the rainy season.
Colour code yellow: pay attention, there are safety risks
Exercise caution in Suriname because pickpocketing and theft occur in busy places and in streets and parks outside Paramaribo’s nightlife centre. Criminals often use firearms or machetes, while seasonal floods can make roads in the north and centre impassable. Avoid demonstrations and crowds, and do not fly with Surinamese airlines on the EU Air Safety List, including flights to Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba; transatlantic Surinam Airways/SLM flights are excluded.

Slovenia1High caution
Increased caution
Exercise increased caution because opportunistic theft, armed robbery in Paramaribo, break-ins, mosquito-borne diseases, limited medical services and difficult logistics in the interior rainforest regions create risks. Demonstrations in Paramaribo can turn violent, so avoid protests, large crowds and roadblocks. Avoid Palm Garden in Paramaribo, and use increased caution in Albina, Moengo, the Brokopondo area, the East-West Highway between Paramaribo and Albina and the Para Afobakka Highway.

Exercise normal security precautions
Take normal security precautions in Suriname. Petty crime is common in Paramaribo and nearby areas, while vehicle theft and carjacking occur and foreigners are often targeted. Avoid walking alone at night, secure belongings, avoid public minibuses, and agree taxi fares because taxis hailed on the street may overcharge foreigners. The Guyana border area has gang activity and limited policing, while demonstrations, trekking, poor roads and coastal piracy also pose hazards.
