What each government says

Its level on one scale, its own wording, and a summary of its advice written from its own text

Austria1High caution
Security level 2: security risk

Austria advises caution for Vietnam because conditions may change and individual regions may be closed. Avoid demonstrations and large crowds, and beware of urban petty crime, especially theft, card fraud and scams. Solo women face harassment and rape risks, particularly in Tay Ho and Hanoi’s Old Quarter, while Hanoi has reported assaults mostly against Western women. A visa is normally required, but Phu Quoc has special direct entry rules.

Colour code yellow: pay attention, there are safety risks

Travel with caution in Vietnam. Bag snatching and theft are risks in crowded cities and tourist areas, so avoid remote streets and parks. Drugs and vapes are prohibited, and photographing military or security personnel is forbidden. Tropical storms, landslides, demonstrations and traffic accidents also pose risks. Landmines are present in Quang Tri, central Vietnam and along the Laos border, while landslides are especially likely around Dien Bien, Sapa and Ha Giang.

Increased caution

Exercise increased caution in Vietnam and check information from other sources. Avoid former battlefields in central Vietnam and along the Laos border because unexploded ordnance remains and mined areas may be unmarked. Avoid all protests, guard against pickpocketing and scams, and note that healthcare facilities may not meet international standards. Obtain travel insurance and funds for treatment and repatriation.

No advice against travel

Vietnam is generally safe with normal precautions. Typhoon and monsoon seasons vary regionally; storms and heavy rain pose greatest risk along central Vietnam’s coast, so follow local warnings and evacuation orders. Belgian tourists may stay up to 45 days visa-free, need a passport with six months’ validity, and file a digital arrival declaration from three days before travel. Longer stays and other purposes need visas; buy hospitalisation and repatriation cover.

Exercise normal security precautions

Take normal security precautions in Vietnam. Poor roads, dangerous driving and heavy traffic make travel hazardous, so drive defensively, consider hiring a driver, and avoid motorcycles and night travel. Petty theft is frequent in tourist areas, transport hubs, public transport, restaurants and beaches, although violent crime against foreigners is rare. Women may face harassment and sexual assault, so guard against food or drink spiking, card and ATM fraud, and cybercrime.

Be aware

Use normal precautions and watch for suspicious behaviour. Pickpocketing and phone theft from motorbikes are risks in Ho Chi Minh City and tourist sites, and traffic accidents are frequent. Sexual assaults are rare, but avoid isolated places after dark, and beware of drugged drinks and methanol. Mines threaten central Vietnam near Laos, while storms, floods and landslides affect central and eastern areas, earthquakes the north; fuel shortages may disrupt flights.

Vietnam is generally safe and terrorism is unlikely, but the June to November typhoon season can bring heavy rain, floods and strong winds, so monitor forecasts. Motorbike robberies and theft are more common in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Hue. Store passports and valuables safely and carry document copies. Check airline notices and alternative routes if Middle East cancellations strand you, and maintain travel insurance.

Normal precautions

Take normal precautions when travelling to Vietnam. All Irish passport holders need a visa, and those entering at Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City must also complete a digital prearrival form. Avoid political demonstrations, public gatherings and military or security sites. Petty crime is common, including bag and phone snatching and theft, so safeguard valuables and remain alert in crowded transport hubs and before local festivals.

Foreign nationals entering via Tan Son Nhat International Airport must provide personal information before arrival unless transiting; incomplete submissions may delay processing. Do not drink tap water or ice from unknown sources, guard against snatch thefts and pickpockets in crowded areas, supermarkets and buses, and monitor typhoons, cyclones, landslides and flooding.

Visits without a visa may last up to 45 days, but use the same passport for entry and exit. Overstaying or working illegally can lead to fines, deportation or a travel ban, while exit bans may prevent departure during investigations. Level 1: exercise normal precautions

Exercise normal precautions when travelling to Vietnam, but stay alert for petty crime, especially in popular tourist locations. Landmines and unexploded ordnance exist, with the greatest risk at construction sites. Risk is low in urban and populated areas, including tourist destinations, but hazards may be unmarked and difficult to recognise. Do not pick up or approach unknown metal objects in the ground.
