What each government says

Its level on one scale, its own wording, and a summary of its advice written from its own text

Hungary2Avoid non-essential
Not on the list; hu class

Avoid non-essential travel to Zimbabwe because of security risks. In city centres, solo travellers face robbery, pickpocketing and jewellery theft, especially after dark, and should avoid political events and demonstrations. Do not drive at night except in exceptional circumstances because roads, wildlife and crime make it dangerous. Drivers need a valid passport, original registration document, ownership authorisation if applicable, and temporary import permit; drones are strictly regulated across Southern Africa.

Security level 2: security risk

Exercise caution because Zimbabwe's security situation can change at any time, so avoid outlying or densely populated city districts and political gatherings due to political violence. Take care of theft and robbery at Harare airport and on the route into central Harare. At night in Harare and Bulawayo, robbery risk is higher at red lights and unlit junctions, while smash-and-grab robberies occur in smaller towns. Keep vehicles locked from inside.

Canada1High caution
Exercise a high degree of caution

Exercise a high degree of caution throughout Zimbabwe because crime is common and highway robberies and carjacking occur. Security forces operate roadblocks and restrict the Marange mining fields in Chiadzwa, Mutare, while demonstrations in cities may turn violent and disrupt transport. Be alert near Beitbridge, the Mozambique border, airport roads, tourist sites and safari parks, and use caution on poor roads. Prepare for outages, shortages, fraud and wildlife risks.

Ireland1High caution
High degree of caution

Exercise a high degree of caution in Zimbabwe because the political and economic environment is unpredictable, demonstrations can erupt without warning and become violent, and crime includes armed robbery. Keep a low profile, avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, and leave immediately if a demonstration occurs. Secure accommodation and vehicles, take extra care at Harare International Airport, and drive cautiously amid power cuts, poor roads, fuel shortages and serious accident risks.

Colour code yellow: pay attention, there are safety risks

Violent robbery and theft from cars occur, especially in Harare and other cities. Avoid travel outside cities after sunset and remote or dark places alone; lock car doors and close windows. Heavy rain can cause flooding, landslides and shortages; avoid demonstrations in densely populated poorer areas, where violence and harsh police responses may occur. Healthcare is moderate, especially outside Harare and Bulawayo, so buy insurance; drugs carry severe penalties.

Slovenia1High caution
Increased caution

Exercise increased caution in Zimbabwe because security concerns affect some areas. Avoid areas southwest of Mutare, including the diamond fields and Marange mine, and the northern border belt with Mozambique, where unexploded land mines make travel outside main roads dangerous. Demonstrations can become violent, crime is common in urban centres, and armed robberies may target foreigners. Around Harare's presidential residence, avoid the area and do not use navigation systems.

United States1High caution
Level 2: exercise increased caution

Exercise increased caution in Zimbabwe because of crime and official harassment of U.S. citizens. Opportunistic crime is common, while assault, carjacking, and home invasion also occur; criminals often target foreigners and residents suspected of carrying large sums of cash. Demonstrations may increase around elections, and government-restricted large gatherings can quickly escalate to violence. Foreigners, journalists, and nongovernmental organizations may face heightened government scrutiny.

Exercise normal precautions when travelling to Zimbabwe. Because Estonia has no representation there, use other countries' travel advice and check consular support and entry requirements. A visa is required and can be requested at the border. Carry a valid Estonian driving licence with the international permit required by the Vienna Convention, and note that entry conditions may change without notice.

Exercise normal precautions in Zimbabwe. When driving, stay on major roads, check routes, avoid stopping on highways and prepare for breakdowns, animals, fog and flash floods, especially at night. Do not photograph government buildings or any police- or army-guarded property, or buy or trade ivory or rhino horn without a licence. If travelling via South Africa, minors with one or neither parent must provide specific entry documents.

No warning

Normal precautions apply, with no warning in place. A visa is required, usually granted on arrival for 30 days, and your passport must have at least six months’ validity and three blank pages. The KAZA Univisa is available at airports in Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, and at the Victoria Falls and Kazungula borders. Journalists must obtain accreditation before travel because they risk arrest, detention, fines and deportation without it.
