Angola's December arrivals dip slightly while year shows modest growth

Angola recorded 9,584 tourist arrivals in December 2023, down 0.2% on the same month a year earlier. This was the lowest figure in the second half of the year, trailing November's 12,334 and September's 12,655. The year to date nevertheless stood 3.2% above the same months of the previous year, with December 2022 the last time this calendar month registered a higher total.

Among eight Middle East and Africa countries reporting December arrivals, Angola ranked sixth by the year on year change, with only two countries performing worse. Earlier months had placed Angola more favourably: August 2023 was up 30.7% on a year, July 23.9%, October 27.8% and September 12.2%. November's 22.9% rise was the last reading above 20% before December's slip into marginal decline.

The wider backdrop for Angola's travel sector in December 2023 included jet fuel priced at $2.39 a gallon, down 17.6% on a year earlier. The country's economy expanded by 1.3% across 2023. The best month on record remains January 2022 at 17,828 arrivals, a level December 2023 reached barely more than half of.
