In December 2022 Gambia recorded 27,617 tourist arrivals, up 41.6% on the same month a year earlier. The total stood at 85.7% of the level seen in December 2019. The calendar month last sat higher in 2019, and the year to date figure was 81.3% above the comparable period a year before. The 20th consecutive month of year on year growth extended a long recovery.
Recent months show a mixed pattern. November 2022 reached 25,923 arrivals, 101.5% of the 2019 level and up 82.9% on the year, while October 2022 brought 12,972, 78.1% of 2019 and 40.8% higher. July 2022 stood out at 15,198, 114.0% of 2019, before figures slipped in August and September. December's 36.8% lift against the three year average sat below the peaks of earlier months.
Among eight Middle East and Africa peers with December 2022 data, Gambia ranked seventh by year on year change. Mauritius led the regional set at +169.7%, with South Africa at +32.8% and Antigua and Barbuda at +24.9%. Seychelles posted +6.1% in September 2026. The wider backdrop showed jet fuel at $2.90 a gallon, up 38.3% on the year, alongside 5.5% economic growth in 2022.
