Japan recorded 3,098,900 visitor arrivals in August 2026, down 9.6% on the same month a year earlier. The total stood at 123.0% of the level seen in August 2019 and was 9.1% above the average of the three previous years. The year to date sat 2.7% below the same months of the previous year. Within the region, the change on a year placed Japan 15th among 16 countries with comparable data.
Recent months show a softer trend. July 2026 was 3,442,100 arrivals, up 0.1% on a year, while June 2026 came in at 3,148,754, down 6.8%. May 2026 totalled 3,560,256 arrivals, down 3.6%, and April 2026 recorded 3,692,364, down 5.5%. March 2026 stood at 3,619,159, up 3.5% on a year. The best month on record remains April 2025, with 3,909,128 arrivals, ahead of the latest reading.
Among regional rivals, the picture was mixed. Vietnam rose 18.4% on a year in August 2026 and South Korea gained 23.3%, while Hong Kong was up 5.9%. Malaysia slipped 1.0%, the Philippines eased 0.8% and Thailand fell 2.6%. The yen was 6.7% weaker against the euro on a year, and jet fuel traded at $3.72 a gallon, up 84.0%. Economic growth in 2026 was projected at 0.7%. Forecasts pointed to declines of 14.3% in September, 18.0% in October and 15.4% in November.
