Kiribati records highest December passenger figure on record

December 2018 brought 1,701 passengers, up 30.9% on the same month a year earlier and 107.6% above the average of the three years before. It is the highest figure recorded for that calendar month. Among 13 countries in the region with a December reading, Kiribati ranked second by year on year change.

Passenger numbers rose sharply through the second half of 2018. From 758 in July, when the year on year reading fell 64.2%, volumes moved to 840 in August (+26.5%), 876 in September (+4.5%) and 1,189 in October (+69.1%), before reaching 1,701 in December. The October and December figures also sat well above the average of the previous three years.

Jet fuel stood at $1.70 a gallon in December 2018, down 6.7% on a year earlier. Kiribati's economy grew 3.5% in 2018. The December reading, while the highest for that month, remains below the peak of 2,120 set in July 2017.
