Belize recorded 40,561 tourist arrivals in December 2016, up 1.5% on a year earlier and the highest figure for that calendar month on record. The reading was 17.3% above the average of the three preceding Decembers. The year to date against the same months a year before stood at -16.9%. December sat well above the recent run, exceeding November at 29,510, October at 21,726, August at 25,865 and July at 36,212. September 2016 registered just 27 arrivals, an outlier within the year's profile.
Among 19 countries in the region, Belize ranked 11th by year-on-year change for December 2016. Rivals showed a mixed picture: Antigua and Barbuda fell 6.1% on a year, Grenada slipped 1.0% and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines eased 5.1%. Saint Lucia rose 4.8%, Saint Kitts and Nevis gained 1.9% and Turks and Caicos Islands led the group with a 7.5% rise.
The wider backdrop included a jet fuel price of $1.49 a gallon in December 2016, up 37.8% on a year. Economic growth in Belize for 2016 was recorded at 0.0%. March 2016 remained the best month on record at 43,063 arrivals, ahead of the December reading.
