India recorded 1,060,621 tourist arrivals in December 2024, down 3.7% on the same month a year earlier and at 86.5% of the December 2019 level. The total still stood 17.9% above the average for the three years before. The year to date sat 4.5% higher than the same months the previous year, while the best month on record remained December 2019 at 1,226,398.
December's dip came after a mixed run of monthly moves in the second half of 2024, with November reaching 973,941 (+2.7%), October 840,330 (+1.0%), September 691,247 (+3.6%), August 661,322 (-0.4%) and July 799,842 (+1.7%). India ranked 16th of 20 Asia Pacific countries for the change on a year. Every named rival posted growth, from Australia at +7.8% to Cambodia at +30.5%, with the Philippines at +16.5%, Vietnam +27.4%, Thailand +11.2% and Sri Lanka +18.2%.
The wider context showed jet fuel at $2.10 a gallon in December 2024, down 12.1% on the year, while the rupee sat 2.0% stronger against the euro, making a trip dearer for visitors paying in euros. India's economy grew 7.2% in 2024.
