Laos recorded 365,032 tourist arrivals in December 2024, up 10.8% on the same month a year earlier and at 79.8% of the December 2019 level. It marked the fifth consecutive month ahead of the year before, with the year to date running 20.6% above the previous year. The last time the December figure was higher than this was in 2019.
November 2024 was the strongest of the recent run at 443,222 arrivals, equivalent to 93.6% of the same month in 2019, before easing to 376,011 in October at 91.0% of 2019. December then registered 365,032. The earlier months of the year were more mixed, with August at 329,996 and 75.4% of 2019, September at 283,600 and 78.3%, and July at 215,378, equal to 51.5% of 2019 and down 26.0% on a year.
Among 20 countries in the region reporting December 2024, Laos ranked 12th by year on year change. Cambodia led the listed rivals with a 30.5% gain, ahead of Sri Lanka at 18.2%, New Zealand at 14.4%, Laos at 10.8%, and Australia at 7.8%, while India was 3.7% lower and Nepal 4.7% lower. The best month on record remains November 2019 at 473,648. Jet fuel on the world market stood at $2.10 a gallon in December 2024, down 12.1% on a year, while the economy grew by 13.5% in 2024.
